TWO FERRARI Dino cars have sold for a combined £383,000 during the same auction, despite one of them needing significant restoration. The model has in recent years become a golden goose for any owners lucky enough to have acquired one years ago, and the latest Silverstone Auctions sale shows what a cash cow even poor condition examples have become. A recently-restored 1971 Dino topped £250,000 inclusive of its buyer's premium, while the rusting form of a 1973 version still brought about a £132,500 sale.

Car makers do like to get their Facebook fans to ‘design’ a car; it’s a good way of drawing fans in to the brand and give them an idea of what floats buyers’ boats. Some are not all that impressive, but the 911 Carrera 4S Porsche has built in celebration of getting 5 million fans on Facebook – designed with input from those fans – is actually quite understated. It comes in a quite fetching shade of Aqua Blue Metallic, a set of white 20″ alloys (a bit tacky), sports suspension and exhaust, an Aerokit with big back spoiler, personalised sill plates, brushed aluminium trim inside and a plaque telling the world this is a Porsche designed by 5 million Facebook fans.

Whatever you think of the new Mercedes S-Class (Merchant Bankers car?), and whatever you think of Mercedes name for its clever suspension tech – Magic Body Control – you have to be impressed by the technology. Yes, Magic Body Control might sound like a cheesy Paul Daniels magic trick or an undergarment for ladies of a certain age, but what it does is far more impressive than anything Paul Daniels or the makers of supportive lingerie can muster. A camera on top of the windscreen scans the road ahead on Mercedes cars fitted with MBC looking for lumps and bumps in the way and sends that data to the suspension to set it up for the best possible ride.
